More RTGs coming into service at CTCT

South Africa’s port and rail freight state-owned entity has confirmed that it will unveil a fleet of brand new rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes as part of ongoing machine improvements at the Port of Cape Town.

Transnet said it had allocated R3.4 billion into the terminal capital investment plan for the acquisition of new cargo-handling equipment.

This includes 28 RTGs, four reach stackers, three forklifts, 47 haulers, and 47 trailers, amongst others.

Earlier this month, it was reported that delivery of new equipment was continuing apace at the Cape Town Container Terminal, and exporters are already seeing results.

Exporters Western Cape chair Terry Gale said the terminal had already observed a reduction in truck turnaround times through the introduction of commissioned RTGs.

“The second batch of nine RTGs has been fully assembled. The Liebherr commissioning team will now complete the electrical work, painting, and installation of spreaders before beginning endurance testing, which takes place under live operational conditions,” he said at the time.

“These units, along with the third batch, are expected to enter service more quickly, as operator training and GPS mapping have already been completed.”
