Greater capacity is being added to the Maputo corridor by Transport Holdings, which has built up a strong base in providing logistics services to the mining, fast moving consumer goods, industrial and retail sectors in Botswana. “Our sights are set on the future opportunities on the SAMozambique corridor,” says Rudi Nagel, business development manager for Transport Holdings. “The forecast exports for the mining industry from Mozambique offer great opportunities for logistics providers, and we believe with our expertise and understanding of the mining industry that we will be able to offer competitive solutions to the sector.” “The challenge most mining companies face (and will face for some time) is how to get their product to the port with the limited rail infrastructure available. Although there are many rail development projects on the go, we believe there will be a significant delay in providing the required rail capacity in time. “This creates an opportunity for road transporters to fill that critical gap as we have done for many years,” he says. Transport Holdings moves up to 75000 tons of ore per month for African Copper from Takadu to the Mowana mine for processing. The company also keeps a close eye on the maintenance of the gravel roads used by the transport fleet as this is a key component of the project. “We are currently busy with the MTTP project for Jwaneng Mine, where meeting the required deadlines is critical, as is ensuring that the newly manufactured plant arrives at the mine in a disassembled manner in perfect condition. “This requires meticulous planning and communication between the project team, their suppliers and the transport authorities,” he says. Transport Holdings manages a fleet of 220 of vehicles, and also provides customs clearing, revenue authority compliance and other documentation services. “We have added Mozambique to our radar where we would like to play a significant role in the logistics opportunities offered by the development of Mozambique,” he says.
