Panamax-sized bulk vessels
can now leave the coal and
magnetite terminal at Terminal de
Carvão da Matola (TCM) following
the dredging of the Port of Maputo
access channel and the completion
of a berth deepening and quay offset
project at the terminal.
Modifications to the terminal
include the deepening of its existing
berth pocket to -15.4 metres below
Chart Datum to accommodate
fully laden Panamax vessels,
refurbishment and the installation
of a new fender support structure
and fender system extending the
quay by an 8.5-metre offset.
In addition, the boom on the
larger of two TCM ship loaders has
been extended to be able to load at
this offset.
An engineering study is under
way to evaluate the changes that
need to be made to the second ship
loader, according to Bongiwe Ntuli,
CEO of Grindrod Freight Services.
