Maputo is becoming more competitive as a transit gateway for cargo inbound from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Swaziland, according to Nicola del Vecchio, managing director of MSC Mozambique. Volumes are growing through Maputo, and these are helping to strengthen the business case for DP World, the operator of the container terminal, to make further investments in order to add another berth and to dredge at the quayside, he says. More freight is moving by road and rail, and the DP World container terminal has reported a succession of record-breaking months during 2019.
