Suppliers of fast moving
consumer goods into the
Mozambican market are
benefiting from investment
in the Maputo corridor, according
to Terence Odendaal, managing
director of Teralco Logistics.
South African importers
may also find that Maputo
is a competitive port of
entry.
“The Maputo corridor
has seen impressive
development over the
last decade.
“We have
already
witnessed bulk
commodities
being the
primary
beneficiary of the corridor’s
development agenda. However,
going forward we are of the firm
opinion that fast moving consumer
goods (FMCG) will be next in line to
benefit from the improvements.”
And these
improvements
have extended
beyond
infrastructure.
“We have found
that technology,
systems and
processes have
seen huge
improvements,
which means that
the timeframes
have reduced to
the point that the
Maputo corridor can begin
competing with
competitors
such as the N3 Durban corridor,” he
says.
South African companies are also
benefiting from the development of
the corridor.
“What has been very eye-opening
for us is that the
Mozambique
growth trajectory,
together with
improvements
on the Maputo
corridor, have
resulted in a
spill-over effect
regarding
logistical costs
and efficiencies
in neighbouring
Mpumalanga.
“We believe that
some good lessons can be learned
by governments around the world
regarding the development of trade
corridors and their positive impact
on the entire surrounding region,”
he says.
Teralco Logistics offers the full
spectrum of logistical services to
the FMCG industry in South Africa
and the rest of the southern African
region.
“These services include freight,
handling, warehousing and customs
clearing. Our experience on the
Maputo corridor ensures that our
customers do not face any surprises
when it comes to moving their
valuable and time-sensitive cargo,”
says Odendaal.
Clients can access the services
through a new Teralco app which
enables them to receive electronic
quotes, book vehicles, track and
trace the consignment to the final
destination and receive electronic
PODs (including important border
documents), he says.
