Malawi truck drivers appeal against harassment

Malawian truck drivers have appealed to Mozambique’s road transport leaders to ensure that those involved in accidents in the country are not harassed and that the processing of accident reports is expedited to reduce the time that delivery vehicles are held up. This follows a transport meeting held earlier this month in Blantyre where Malawian drivers expressed concern that they were always penalised in accident situations within Mozambique’s borders even in situations where they were not at fault. The Mozambique Ministry of Transport and Communication said that minor accidents could be settled out of court, but those that involved fatal or serious injuries had to be resolved in court according to the country’s laws. “If the driver is a foreigner, the court may require that he is held in custody until the case is resolved,” the Ministry said.
