Malawi airport upgrade

LEONARD NEILL MALAWI’S LARGEST airport, Kamuzu International Airport, situated in the capital of Lilongwe, is to undergo a US$8,5-million rehabilitation. Malawi’s Ministry of Transport and Public Works has announced that it is now identifying contractors for the project with the technical assistance of South African consultancy firm Africon. The project is to be funded by the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (Badea). Th airport’s main runway, the major parallel taxiway and link taxiways as well as the airport’s internal roads are all to be upgraded. Works will include milling off of 300 000m² of the existing wearing course, which involves laying 37mm asphaltic concrete on the 3,3km runway and the 2,5km long taxiways. About 16 000 tons of asphalt will be applied to the surfaces in the process. Commencement times and scheduled completion dates are to be announced when the final tenders have been approved. Cash-strapped Air Namibia gets R116-m injection Leonard Neill Air Namibia will have R116-million ploughed into its coffers by the Namibian government during the current financial year to ensure the cash-strapped airline stays afloat. Finance minister Sara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila revealed this in her budget presented to the National Assembly recently. This means that the government will have spent R1,5-billion in funding the airline during the past five years, when the current financial year ends next March.
