MIRACLES ARE far and few between these days which explains why Maersk Sealand's Melody Barber was ever so happy when her order materialised in 'miracle' time for a rather special occasion.
Maersk Sealand had only two days to come up with a suitable trophy on being informed by the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry that it was to be the main sponsor of this year's Western Cape Exporter of the Year Awards.
The choice fell on a hand-blown, recycled, glass globe fixed onto a glass base and in turn onto a wooden base to hold the names of future winners.
World continents were then sandblasted onto the globe by the Johannesburg branch of a well-known Swazi glass company.
We thought the world would be a fitting theme for an award and it took only 36 hours from the time of order to delivery which is a miracle, said Barber, public relations manager for Maersk Sealand in Cape Town.
Maersk Sealand made it a double occasion by announcing sponsorship of the Western Cape Exporter of the Year award and refocusing customer attention on the successful Samba service initiated between South America, South Africa and the Middle East earlier this year at a theme evening complete with authentic cuisine, veiled maidens, Arab horses, a fire eater...even a belly dancer.
Maersk Sealand's R45 000 sponsorship of the award is to be used largely for promotion, the award ceremony taking place on August 29 at a venue still to be finalised. Entry forms for the award are available from the Chamber at (021) 418 4300.
