OVER THE next three years the Eastern Cape government will spend R145-million on the Coega deep-water harbour and industrial development zone outside Port Elizabeth.
This is in addition to R40-million given to the Coega Development Corporation (CDC) by the provincial government in February this year.
Delivering his budget speech in the Bisho legislature, economic affairs MEC Enoch Godongwana said the CDC would receive R60-million in the 2001/2002 financial year, R35-million the following year, and a third amount of R50-million for the year ending March 31, by which time the port is expectedto be operational.
The funding will go towards the purchase of land and the development of infrastructure in the Coega IDZ.
Tenders for the building of a bridge on the national road between Port Elizabeth and East London, reticulation and service roads are expected to be called in April. Work would start in May.
Portnet has budgeted a further R1,65-billion for the building of a port to serve the Coega IDZ. Work has started on a haul road to carry rock from a quarry to the site of the port.
