BIRD-WATCHING was all in a day's work for Maritime Carrier Shipping which recently carried 400 live ostriches aboard the Diamond Land from Cape Town to Lisbon.
The birds, which were moved in twenty 40-foot open top containers, were stowed on the more sheltered poop deck, protected by barriers of 3-high containers on either side.
It was the first time that such a large number had been exported by sea from South Africa.
Months of effort to ensure the safety and well-being of the birds - plus four new-laid eggs - were rewarded when they reached Lisbon after their 13-day trip in excellent health.
