MACS launches fortnightly Walvis Bay service

MARITIME CARRIER Shipping (Macs) will launch a fixed day liner service from Europe and the UK to Walvis Bay every 14 days following the deepening of the Walvis Bay harbour.
The announcement was made jointly by MACS' Hamburg headquarters and its Walvis Bay agents, King and Sons. The first sailing accepting cargo will be Green Cape which leaves Antwerp on May 12, with a scheduled arrival in Walvis Bay on May 28.
The direct service will offer transit times of 16 days from Antwerp, 17 from Rotterdam and 19 from Hamburg, accepting containers, breakbulk, roro cargo as well as project and heavy lift cargoes.
This decision is a major success and step forward for our efforts, says Frank Gschwender, business development executive of the Walvis Bay Corridor Group.
It is directly related to the deepening of the port from 10m to 12,8m by the Namibian Ports Authority.
The decision by MACS completes the logistic chain of the Corridor and substantially contributes to the provision of a viable and efficient logistic option along the route. It is expected that this development will generate additional business and boost the utilisation of the abundant spare capacities this transport corridor offers.
