Long-term solutions needed

Africa’s trade is growing faster than its infrastructure and there is a need for long-term, sustainable infrastructure solutions on the continent. “Temporary solutions such as reinforcement of bridges are often vital in helping to move a particular project forward. However, Africa’s development is the greater issue and if there are no long-term, sustainable solutions going forward, trade growth will come to a standstill,” said Les Dodds projects and logistics manager at AMEC. While he concedes that longterm, sustainable infrastructure development is costly he said that other modes of transport should then be considered. “In Russia cargo is often transported over zip lines, even across relatively long distances,” he said.
