Long-term demand calls for major railway freight hub in Gauteng

There is no doubt that Gauteng needs a major railway freight hub, says Deidre Strydom, senior manager capital planning for Transnet. “City Deep is saturated and various studies have shown that we can only reconfigure it. It cannot be expanded, so it goes without saying that Gauteng needs a major railway freight hub that is bigger than City Deep.” According to Strydom capacity plans indicate that existing terminals in the province will not cope with a long-term demand. “The solution lies in maximising the footprint of our existing terminals before we develop new super terminals, but also to look at developing a major railway freight hub that is close to the customers, that has good access to road infrastructure, is close to the main corridors and allows for good growth opportunities for the logistics infrastructure.”
