Beira-based Specialized Transport has taken the lead as one of the first Mozambican companies to begin working on the development of the liquid natural gas (LNG) projects in northern Mozambique. Projects have already started to flow and the company has been moving aggregate and cement for the shore-based facilities in the Afungi LNG Park, according to managing director Chris Morris. Phillip de Beer has been appointed to handle the day-today running of the company to allow Morris to focus on the LNG and other major projects in the region. The company has been investing in tractors and low-bed trailers to handle some of the project cargo for the gas and oil companies building the facilities. For some cargo Beira will be the closest port able to handle the offloading of the units for the LNG “trains” used to scrub and liquefy the gas. There will also have to be very careful planning of the logistics during the preparation stage in which a large amount of concrete will be used. Specialized Transport is expanding its tanker fleet in order to meet the expected demand for the fuel needed to feed the earth-moving equipment and hundreds of trucks that will be involved in the building of two land-based facilities. Work has also started on a new international airport at Afungi.
