Having done business in Mozambique for at least three decades, during which time he has invested both his company and his money in the country, LBH managing director Athol Emerton has an intimate understanding of how the country works. And, he has never been more positive about its future. “There is no doubt that what lies ahead is a huge adventure for everyone in Mozambique. “The LNG projects will change the country and I am confident will improve the quality of life for most – and hopefully all – Mozambican people. I am confident that we have the right government and right people to do it,” he told FTW. “I think Mozambique has always been attractive as an investment destination. It’s just logical. It’s a huge country of enormous natural resources with logical corridors into the hinterland countries. It’s a country the African continent can be proud of. Sure, there have been issues but when I compare what it was like when we first started our investment 30+ years ago to what it is today, and to what it will be in the future 20 years, it is a country its people should be very proud of. “As always, my advice to investors is to respect local laws and regulations, invest in advice and then invest your capital. “As far as cargo owners are concerned, I think the Mozambique corridors and ports offer competitive opportunities to export domestic and transit cargoes and for importers to explore the hinterland markets.”
