Beira is now a “serious competitor” for Durban as a transit hub for Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia and DRC, according to Andreas Kusza, senior management advisor at Manica Freight Services. “The port is already playing a vital role in the movement of cargo in the region and this is set to grow,” he says. Ironically, Cyclone Idai has helped raise the profile of the port and highlight its strengths. Kusza is among the many logistics specialists in Mozambique who are full of praise for the port operator and the various entities on the Beira Corridor which had cargo moving freely within a fortnight of the devastating winds and floods. “The port operator went on a very effective road trip to reassure everybody that imports and exports were flowing once again,” he told FTW.
