Neighbouring South Africa remains Mozambique’s top African trading partner. South Africa accounts for 86% of total intra-Africa trade (exports and imports), followed by eSwatini (2%) and Namibia (2%). The main export products to South Africa are electrical energy and natural gas, while the main imports are vehicles and electrical energy. During 2018 South Africa accounted for 26% of Mozambican imports, worth US$1.7 billion. This was followed by China at US$800m, followed by the United Arab Emirates at 7.7% of the total, or US$591m. On the export side, South Africa is third globally, after India (US$1.44bn or 28% of the total), and the Netherlands (21% and US1.1 bn). South Africa’s imports from Mozambique totalled US$896m, or 17% of the Mozambican total.
