KZN airport to receive R32m upgrade

MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala.

Plans for a R32-million upgrade at Mkhuze Airport in KwaZulu Natal were unveiled by MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala, yesterday (Tuesday).

The initial aim of the upgrade is to boost tourism in that region of KwaZulu Natal. But he noted that once completed it would also be able to cater for freight aircraft, fuel supply, training and other aviation-related activities.

Zikalala has also urged the private sector to play an active role in the development of the airport, adding that potential investors had already shown interest.

“We want to get the airport to a state that makes it attractive for investment in the area,” he added. “The airport is surrounded by vacant developable land that makes provision for non-aviation activities.”
