The Kenyan government will introduce new legislation - provisionally called the Know Your Customer bill - to fight illegal trade.
Several government agencies will join forces in the proposed intervention.
Patrick Njoroge, governor at the Central Bank of Kenya, said the bill was intended to curb money laundering as well as the movement of counterfeit medicine, drugs, weapons and contraband through the country.
He said that once it had been passed, Kenyan importers and exporters would be forced to properly identify the individuals or companies sending or receiving packages from around the world.
Once presented to Kenya’s parliament, the bill is expected to be signed into law by the end of the year. – Zoë van Rooyen.
