The Japanese ambassador to Angola, Kuniaki Ito, this week announced that Japan is prepared to fund the second phase of modernisation of the port of Namibe, once it receives a detailed costing from the port administration.
This follows the Japanese government having already funded the first phase at a cost the equivalent of R312 million – largely focused on extending the quay length from 240 metres to 875 metres.
But it also included a 25 000 square metre parking area, modernised access roads and a water supply system for ships.
The second phase is aimed at increasing cargo handling capacity, and deepening the approach channels and berths to accommodate larger vessels.
