RAY SMUTS HAVING COME a long way in the landside transportation and management of containerised reefer cargo, Cross Country Containers regards its involvement in this highly specialised business as extremely important in terms of total service offering. “As such,” says national customer call centre manager Jill Groom, “we continue to invest in our people, operating systems and transport infrastructure to keep abreast of changing requirements.” One such example is a substantial investment in six-meter and 12-meter tri-axle trailers in order to transport loads up to a gross mass of 25500kg and 32 000kg respectively. This has enabled Cross Country to offer extremely competitive transport rates through not applying the ‘overmass’ surcharge. In addition, the company offers goods in transit cover of R500 000 per container - one of the highest in the industry. With a reputation for executing all requirements in an efficient and professional manner, the company has developed sound relationships and communications with all pack stores, thereby ensuring all containers are packed and returned to vessel stacks in time for shipment, says Groom. In addition, all containers are tracked, and computerised reefer lists handed over to the relevant authorities within the stipulated deadlines. It’s sound client base includes P&0 Nedlloyd, Maersk Sealand and Safmarine, GoReefers, Spectrum Shipping, Federated Meats and Nature’s Choice.
