An investigation has been launched into the cause of last week’s horror crash near Cape Town’s M5 exit where a container truck overturned and fell onto a vehicle in the adjacent lane.
Sufficient legislation exists to regulate all vehicles on the provincial road network, including heavy duty vehicles, according to Siphesihle Dube, spokesperson for the Western Cape department of public works and transport.
“Regular enforcement interventions are applied by provincial traffic authorities to ensure compliance with regard to driver and motor vehicle fitness, roadworthiness and safe anchorage of containers,” said Dube.
While the investigation is under way, Dube said it was believed the truck driver had lost control of his vehicle while speeding.
The City of Cape Town is also looking into additional safety measures around driver competency. See story on page 7.
