Internationally accredited training programme launched

This month saw the launch of a new export-import certification (EIC) course, developed through the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Singapore.

The programme, offered at DB Schenker’s logistics campus, offers South African learners a global approach to the regulations and processes of international trade.

“It is the only internationally accredited programme of its kind in Africa,” said South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry board member and accredited master trainer for the ICC, Linda Bird.

“This is a programme that I’ve been trying for years to get to South Africa. It allows you to do an international trade course with international recognition in the Middle East and Africa.”

She said that the EIC would cover a range if topics – from international import and export transactions and customs clearance procedures to value origin and HS coding.

“From a career development point of view, this is an ideal opportunity to look at both the export and the import side and see how the two actually marry together,” said Bird.

According to Bird, the EIC is a practical course that uses a “simple and interactive” online interface and can be completed in one’s own time. It is expected to take no longer than one year to complete if the learner spends an hour a week on the coursework.

While the EIC is ICC accredited, it is currently not accredited by the Transport Education Training Authority which means that companies are only able to get 15% of their budget spend back.
