International airport planned for south Mozambique

The Mozambique government intends to call for the construction of an international airport in the southern province of Gaza - about 17 kilometres from Xai-Xai, the provincial capital.

Xai-Xai, in turn, is just over 214kms east-north-east of the national capital and main port of Maputo.

The reason for this new airport, said an official statement, was the development potential that would stem from it – particularly in the international tourism sector.

According to macauhub.com, the estimated construction cost of the Gaza airport – with a 1 600-metre runway - is the equivalent of R659.4 million.
