Fraud and insider theft remain two of the biggest security concerns for companies in South Africa. According to George Bennet, senior consultant for Control Risks, official indications are that commercial crime is decreasing in the country but this does not necessarily tell the full picture. “There is a lot of insider theft and fraud going unnoticed, and by the time companies do pick up on what is happening internally they are not necessarily taking any steps to address it,” he told FTW. “There are various reasons why this happens – from inventory controls not taking the security threat into account to the correct security measures not being in place to address the losses,” he said.
