Increased import demand has boosted growth in South Africa’s industrial and warehousing sector – while the health export sector has added further impetus, according to JLL Sub-Saharan Africa research analyst Omphile Ramokhoase. “Imports have come to play a greater role in South African consumer activity, and this has contributed to a growing demand for logistics and warehousing. The inflow of manufactured goods, mostly consumer goods, has contributed to the increased demand for storage, logistics and warehousing services in the country.” According to Ramokhoase, there is a clear correlation between the trend in wholesale and retail trade sales and imports. In 2018, South Africa imported over R1 trillion worth of goods, with a similar amount exported to other parts of the world.
