Idle fleet takes big jump

On August 24 the idle containership fleet had increased by 100 000 TEUs in just over two weeks, said Alphaliner.

Idle ships (of more than 500 TEU) totalled 175 units and reached a total of 484 000 TEU. The fleet includes nine ships of 8 500-13 900 TEU, idled because of ongoing Asia-Europe sailing cancellations.

The recent devaluation of the Chinese yuan could further dampen freight demand, Alphaliner added.
