Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) recorded significant and steady growth in cargo volumes handled in April, according to a statement released yesterday (Sunday).

Volumes were up by 8.9% (to 398 000 tonnes) compared to the same month in 2016.

The growth is attributed to a 14% year-on-year growth in exports which increased more notably in the key trading regions of North America and Europe.

Combining March and April results – to even out the seasonal impact of the Easter holidays –cargo tonnage showed substantial year-on-year growth (13.4%), while in the first four months of 2017, HKIA handled 1.5 million tonnes of cargo, up 10.9% from the same period last year.

Volumes handled increased by 7.3% - amounting to 4.7 million tonnes - on a 12-month rolling basis.
