Hands-on approach

Corinne French, a director of United Maritime Logistics (UML), has during her rise in the industry found it to be interesting and challenging – “as no day is the same”. She has also experienced the challenges of a male dominated industry, and told FTW that the answer had been “hard work, dedication and long hours”. But, she insisted, she had never felt threatened. Indeed, her confidence had been enhanced, and she had enjoyed encouragement from people in the industry. “People respect my knowledge on the USA trade,” French said. “At the same time, I am customer and service orientated and believe in a hands-on approach, and getting involved with the day-to-day work.” From her days at Germiston High School, French started her career path as secretary to Chris McDonald, vice chairman of retailers and wholesalers, Frasers Limited for seven years. The turning point came in 2001 when French and Claude Nuttall were offered the opportunity to represent DCL as agent in South Africa. “This,” she said, “was when United Maritime Logistics started – and the company has grown from strength to strength.” Completing her life away from business, French has been married 25 years and has three children. “A wonderful family,” she said, “which has given me all the support I need.”
