THE FOURTH edition of the popular self-instruction training manuals developed by Chris Richards has just been published. The three-book series - Importing and the Customs Clearance Process; Freight Forwarding; and Airfreight. Exports. Marine Insurance – targets the importer, exporter and any person involved in the logistics chain. This ranges from freight forwarders and airlines to banking staff and warehousemen. When Richards first launched the manuals in the early 90s he was confident that he had a winning formula – and the response has proved him right. Each edition has been sold out. Well known in the logistics and training environment, his solid operational background is complemented by many years of experience in the training arena. The latest edition incorporates several key changes which include new Customs procedures and documents (like SAD 500), new air waybill conditions, new rail procedures and documents as well as references to websites to enhance the source of information. “The emphasis is on selfinstruction,” says Richards, “with each book including an 80-question assessment questionnaire as a selfevaluation exercise.” They also concentrate on the ‘why’ more than the ‘how’. “So, for example, the purpose of a Customs bill of entry is explained but the learner is not shown how to complete the document – this is assumed to be done by a customs clearing agent.” The books, which are available directly from Richards, sell as a set and retail at R250 plus VAT.
