Fire briefly suspends Durban port operations

Operations at Transnet's Durban Multi-Purpose Terminal were suspended on Monday night after a fire broke out at D Berth.

According to a well-placed source, it was initially understood that a mobile crane had caught alight while a vessel was berthed alongside the quay. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.

The blaze, which was visible across parts of Durban, prompted an emergency response at the port.

Transnet did not respond to Freight News's questions regarding the circumstances and cause of the incident but confirmed that operations had been suspended while emergency teams dealt with the fire.

"The Durban Multi-Purpose Terminal can confirm that terminal operations were temporarily affected on the evening of June 22 for approximately an hour due to a fire incident at D Berth," Transnet said.

"The fire was successfully extinguished, and there were no injuries. All affected stakeholders were informed, and operations in the affected section fully resumed after an hour. The cause of the incident is being investigated."

The extent of any damage to equipment has not yet been disclosed.
