European car manufacturer invests R6bn into SA production plant

BMW has signed a R6bn contract for the production of the X3 in South Africa.

German-owned automotive manufacturer, BMW, has awarded a R6-billion contract to its plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria for the production of the new generation BMW X3 for the domestic and export markets.

Managing director of BMW South Africa, Tim Abott, said in a statement that the Automotive Production Development Programme (APDP) was paramount to this investment decision.

Production of the BMW X3 at the Rosslyn plant will replace production of the BMW 3-Series sedan, which will be allocated to other plants in the group’s production network.

Abbott said more than R3bn would be invested in facilities at the Rosslyn plant for the production of the BMW X3 and an additional estimated R3bn for suppliers, launch costs and training.
