In news just in about the situation in eSwatini, the Transist Assistance Bureau (Transist) has been told that a state of martial law has been declared by King Mswati III.
The source, who is known to Freight News, said the country would keep everyone posted.
“All vehicles are to remain standing in an as safe as possible area.”
The Transist message adds that the borders are still closed and exits out of the country are not allowed.
In the meantime, the trickle of independent news in a country where the media is muzzled appears to be slowing after the government shut down the internet.
Some information though is still coming out via Twitter.
Video footage sent out via the social media platform shows part of a truck yard at eSwatini Beverages on fire, with several tankers in the distance appearing to be right in the middle of a blaze.
The message accompanying the footage says the brewer, in which the king holds shares, has been set alight by protesters.
“Tension is escalating in the tiny kingdom. Citizens want the king to surrender power.”
Another message says: “The government of Swaziland is patronising the citizens. Shutting down the internet and posting on social media that they should raise their concerns on an email address. With what internet?”
Freight News has also seen messages saying that the situation is very tense, especially in and around Matsapha, where pro-democracy protesters started looting and setting fire to businesses and infrastructure over the weekend.
Independent online outlet, Swazi News, has also reported that the unrest is rippling into rural areas.
