LEONARD NEILL THE FIRST ever elephant to become airborne will be flown from Canada to South Africa during March, en route to an Eastern Cape game reserve. Famous in Canada and the US as the ‘biggest elephant on earth’, Angus has appeared in Canadian and US film and magazine advertisements for the past 25 years. A Russian Antonov freighter, the largest in operation, will convey him on an 18-hour journey, flying via the US and Dakar in Senegal to Johannesburg. Moving in a specially constructed crate and kept slightly sedated throughout the journey, Angus will be transported by road to Pemba Private Game Reserve near Grahamstown. Standing 4.15m at the shoulder, he was taken from the Kruger Park as a two-year-old to join the Bowmanville Zoo owned by Canadian trainer Michael Hackenberger.
