launched Trade Africa, a
unit within the ministry,
to promote South Africa’s
trade relations with the
African continent. On the
same day the minister also
launched its “Guidelines
for Good Business
Practice by South African
Companies” operating in
the rest of Africa.
Preferential Rules of
Origin
On 12 July the World
Customs Organisation
(WCO) announced the
release of its “Comparative
Study on Preferential
Rules of Origin”. The study,
which is value neutral, does
not intend to challenge
existing origin legislation
of any WCO member but
is intended to enhance the
overall understanding of the
origin legislation.
163rd WTO Member
The World Trade
Organisation (WTO) on
14 July announced that
Liberia had become its
163rd member, after nearly
10 years of negotiating its
accession. Liberia is the
eighth least-developed
country (LDC) to accede
to the WTO through
negotiations, whilst seven
out of 19 African countries
are negotiating their WTO
accession.
World Trade Outlook
Indicator
On 08 July the WTO
launched its new World
Trade Outlook Indicator
(WTOI), designed to provide
“real time” information
on trends in global trade.
The WTOI was unveiled
in Shanghai, The People’s
Republic of China ahead
of a meeting of G20 trade
ministers. The WTOI gives
a headline figure to show
performance against trend.
A reading of 100 would
indicate trade growth in
line with recent trends, a
reading greater than 100
would suggest above trend
growth, while a reading
below 100 indicates below
trend growth.
