Removal of the Luxury Tax on Certain Goods
With effect from 01 April 2007 the ad valorem customs and excise duty, also known as the luxury tax, will be removed from air conditioning machines installed in motor vehicles, domestic dish washing machines, camera lenses, sunglasses, binoculars, telescopes, instant print cameras, other photographic cameras, flashlights and flashbulbs, cinematographic cameras, cinematographic projectors, slide projectors, image projectors. If you want to save some money here you might just want to delay the purchase of these items for a month or two.

There will be a customary increase in rates on specific customs and –excise duties - so-called “sin taxes – as follows: duty on a packet of 20 cigarettes increases by R0.60c, on a 340ml can of beer by R0.05c, on a 750ml bottle of wine by R0.10c, and on a 750ml bottle of spirits R1.88c.
Proposed Tariff Amendments – 04 April 2007 Effective from April 04, 2007 there will be an increase in the general fuel levy of 5c/l for both petrol and diesel, taking the levy on these products to 121c/l and 105c/I respectively.
Trade Remedy Applications – Response Closed The initiation of a sunset review of the anti-dumping duties on woven fabrics of polyester staple fibres mixed mainly or solely with cotton, originating in or imported from People’s Republic of China (China). The initiation of a sunset review of the countervailing duties on stranded wire, ropes and cables of iron or steel, originating in India and imported from Usha Martin Limited.
