“Productivity issues at the Port of Durban are very real, especially when it comes to communication between management and lower level staff breaking down,” says SDV branch manager in Durban Russell Swanepoel. It is imperative that port authorities look at finding ways of addressing the challenges – that include escalating costs and deteriorating service delivery, he said. “Non-attention to these issues will cost our ports significantly when customers start opting to use other ports like Maputo, Beira, Walvis Bay and Dar es Salaam.
