Long-term plans for DP World
Cargo Services (DPWCS)
include providing stevedoring
support in the ports of Beira and
Nacala.
This follows the success of the
introduction of two RAM Revolver
spreaders into the port of Maputo,
according to Ian Hall, general
manager of DP World Cargo
Services Africa Region.
The RAM spreaders, which
DP World first started using
in Adelaide, Australia, are
hydraulically operated opentopped
containers that deliver the
ore directly into the hold.
They take their power
from the quay crane
in the same way as a standard
electro-hydraulic spreader.
DP World Cargo Services is
planning to
load up to
30000 tons of
magnetite a day
in the port of
Maputo using
the system.
DPWCS
Mozambique
has been
providing stevedoring and related
services in Maputo for the past
three years, according to Hall.
DPWCS opened its South
African operations in April 1998.
It has operations in the ports of
Durban, Richards Bay, Cape Town
and Port Elizabeth.
It is now positioning itself to
support the
growth in the
mining sector to
the north.
“I foresee that
bulk volumes
will continue
to grow, along
with an increase
in project cargo
to service the growing mining
industry,” he says.
DPWCS provides a full range of
stevedoring and ancillary services
(i.e. lashing, securing and tally).
