DoT developing guidelines for autonomous vehicle legislation

Work is under way to develop guidelines for testing, licensing and legislation of autonomous vehicle technology, according to transport minister Fikile Mbalula.

“Similar work is in progress in relation to putting  in  place  requisite  regulations  for electric vehicles,” he said.

“We must create a conducive environment for investment in these new technologies.”

The plan is to work closely with the automotive industry and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition. “This will enable us to align our plans with theirs and to enable localisation.”

Transport is regarded as one of the  highest  greenhouse gas-emitting  sectors.
