Delta keeps Africa trucking

Ed Richardson THE PORT Elizabeth-based Delta Motor Corporation grew its exports into right-hand drive countries in Africa by almost 80% between January and July 2002 compared with the same period last year. Delta says a total of 1 942 units was exported by the company during the first seven months of this year. This compares with 1086 units during the same period last year. Delta has 26% market share in the right-hand drive African market. This is up 6% on last year, despite the fact that the company does not have marketing rights in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. One-ton Isuzu pick-ups accounted for 1 462 of the exported units while small car deliveries accounted for 288 export sales. "The popularity of the Isuzu one-ton range was pivotal to this success, accounting for 75% of Delta's total exports into Africa," says Andre van Rooyen, Delta's director of exports.
