Africa’s maritime sector must be decolonised to the benefit of the continent’s people. Addressing the 4th International Bunker Industry Association (Ibia) conference in Cape Town recently, Dumisani Ntuli, acting deputy director general for maritime in the Department of Transport (DoT), said maritime activities could contribute significantly to the improvement of living standards of people. Ntuli said the story of Africa was that of many other developing continents and countries continuing to struggle for survival in the face of deprivation, poverty, inequality, climate change and rapid technological developments engulfing the world. “The many challenges faced by the world and its citizens have a double impact on developing continents and countries within them. It is therefore in this context that the world order has to be well balanced in the manner it makes and adopts international standards and regulations so that these do not impact negatively on developing continents and countries within them.” He said the many mineral resources could no longer just be important for investors and importers but had to equally result in a much greater advantage for that country, the sub-region and the continent.
