Decision on port fees stalled

Although there were hopes that the SA Ports Regulator would have made a decision on the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) request for an 18.6% increase in port fees for 2012/13 by the end of December, this was not forthcoming. According to CEO Riad Khan, requests by the regulator’s board for further work on the analysis and some late submissions from the TNPA stalled hopes for a decision at the December 15 board meeting. The decision now, he told FTW, is likely to be made before the end of this month. But, while he would not reveal the way the regulator’s thinking was going, Khan added: “I don’t think that industry will complain about our final finding.”
