THE PARTIAL closure of the DaimlerChrysler SA plant in East London is likely to see a reduction in shipping volumes between March and June this year, according to Safmarine’s automotive account manager, Dave Kirkman. The closure is a result of production changes to allow DCSA to prepare for the new W204 C-class Mercedes-Benz model. “Since Safmarine transports the bulk of the Mercedes C-Class cargo, we expect volumes on the Europe-South Africa trade to reduce over that four month period,” says Kirkman. Sailing schedules for the March-June period may also be reviewed, although a final decision will only be made after assessing the marketplace requirements across the board. “Safmarine and its partners in the trade are well prepared for the production changes, having been given sufficient notice by DCSA. We understand that the partial plant closure is necessary to secure the long-term viability of the plant,” he said.
