The whole logistics chain is entrusted with more than a customer’s goods – it also stores valuable information that is the target of increasingly sophisticated cyber criminals. “Cyber-crime has evolved into a set of highly specialised, mature criminal products and services – driven by the ability to monetise a company’s data,” warns the Deloitte Depth Perception report 2010. According to recent FBI studies, cyber-crime – with over $1 trillion in annual revenues – has outpaced drug trafficking as the largest illicit global business, according to the report “The threat landscape has grown due to proliferation of technology, global networks, and the sophistication of criminals. “The threats are not limited to strangers lurking outside the gates. People within an organisation’s trusted circle – employees, customers, contractors, and partners – can bring risk as well, both through inadvertent mishandling of information or corruption,” says the report. This insider risk is growing with the increasing use of insecure social media, phishing and spoofing, “and worse”.
