The Western Cape hopes to wipe out the backlog in road maintenance by no later than 2018, according to Robin Carlisle, MEC for transport in the province. Carlisle said recently roads in the Western Cape were in reasonably good condition at present, but this was thanks to a massive drive in recent years to reduce the maintenance backlog. “We get some R60m a year from the national government to spend on our roads. Every last cent of that is spent on maintenance. Our strategy remains in place – there will be no new roads until we have caught up with the backlog.
