The risks of logistics companies and their staff being caught up in a coup are high in the Sahel region, which BMI labels as the “coup belt ”.“Indeed, the core coup belt – comprising Burkina Faso, Chad, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Sudan – has accounted for all but one (Gabon, 2023) of the coups in the region since 2020,” states the latest BMI assessment.“We believe that the risk of coups remains high in numerous SSA markets given perceptions of poor governance, security challenges, social instability, and low levels of economic development,” the report adds. Since 2020, there have been nine successful military coups in SSA, with two – in Niger and Gabon – in the third quarter of 2023.It identifies the Congo Basin as another high-risk area.
