Counselling forms part of strike resolution

IT’S TAKEN four months, but the dispute between the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) and Equity Aviation Services has been resolved. Both parties last week agreed to a wage increase of 12% and a 2% performance incentive for workers. Equity had previously offered 6%.
In addition, all workers dismissed during the strike are to be reinstated, both parties will undergo relationship counselling to improve industrial relations and the workplace environment, and the working week will be restricted to 45 hours.
“It is unfortunate that this strike dragged on for so long, but we are glad that the parties came to the table prepared to compromise,” says Labour minister Membathisi Mdladlana.
