Investment in a container tipper has enabled Beira Logistics Terminals (BLT) to unload up to 1000mt/40 TEUs of bulk containerised commodities a day into a new on-site packing facility in Beira. The bulk is bagged inside the warehouse using bagging machines in a facility designed to support shippers moving bulk through the port and by road. Two bagging machines on site are each capable of handling 1500 tons every 24 hours. “Our facility helps clients to increase the efficiency of moving their cargo through Beira port,” says Jonathan Middleton, BLT warehouse manager. Demand for the transport of bulk cargo in containers is increasing, he says. In 2013 BLT unpacked around 2 000 containers. An open logistics area of 55 000sqm provides space for about 400 full containers at any time as well as the capability to pack and unpack all types of containerised commodities. The facility can also cater for out-ofgauge goods. An empty container storage area is designed for 80 TEUs. Over 25 000 sqm of warehousing on site provides storage for chemicals, fertilisers, dangerous goods and other dry cargo. Security has been upgraded in order to warehouse and handle copper and other high-value minerals following recommendations by corridor security specialists. “We are now able to handle any dry cargo,” says Middleton. Currently copper cathodes and ingots are transferred directly from trucks into containers and then sealed on site. INSERT & CAPTION We are now able to handle any dry cargo. – Jonathan Middleton
