Comair has quelled rumours of a secondary industry strike following reports that infamous trade union, National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), had issued the airline with a strike notice this week.
Comair joint CEO, Wrenelle Stander, said on Thursday that the airline was in continuous discussions with stakeholders and union leaders to try to prevent industrial action, and reassured customers that contingency plans were in place in case it did go through.
“We continue to engage with all union stakeholders and are committed to reaching a ‘win-win’ outcome for all parties in involved - in a way that ensures business sustainability,” said Stander.
“We have contingency plans in place to mitigate the impact of the SAAT strike, however, our operations are currently under pressure and we are experiencing disruption to our flight schedule.”
Reports of a call to action by Numsa for a secondary strike in support of the current South African Airways (SAA) and South African Airways Technical (SAAT) strike have been circulating.
However, according to Comair, they have not yet received a notice of intention to strike. A notice to strike must be issued 48 hours prior to any industrial action being taken and Comair has not yet been served with any notice for a secondary industry strike. – Bjorn Vorster
