THE R3.9-billion port of Ngqura outside Port Elizabeth will start operating in the second half of this year when ships start offloading equipment for the new harbour – on its own quays – says Transnet National Ports Authority (NPA) Port Elizabeth and Ngqura harbour manager Ester Goosen. Commercial shipping is expected to start a year later, she says. The ports of Ngqura and Port Elizabeth will be managed as a single entity, and Goosen is co-ordinating the commissioning of the new port. She says the port is fully on schedule to open officially by June, 2009, but it will be in use as a working harbour up to a year before that.
